Following the success of the Sanctuary in Politics course, City of Sanctuary Dublin has for the past three weekends hosted guest speakers to allow asylum seekers, refugees and migrants opportunities to deepen their knowledge of the Irish political context.
On May 14th, famed journalist and author Deaglán de Bréadún, and retired Irish Times journalist Andy Pollak, conducted a workshop on the history of conflict in Northern Ireland and the emergence of Sinn Féin. This was followed on May 21st by Kevin Kenny’s presentation on the history of the three major political parties in Ireland – Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Labour. Finally, Dublin Bay South TD and recently appointed Fianna Fáil Justice and Equality spokesperson Jim O’Callaghan gave a behind-the-scenes look at Irish politics.
At the end of the final politics workshop, some of the participants got together for a tour of the special 1916 Rising exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland.
As newcomers to Ireland strive to be advocates on the issues that most affect their well-being, being able to skilfully navigate the local context and forming valuable alliances with concerned locals can only serve them well.
